Most jewelry FAQ pages are written by a lawyer or a marketing intern, and it shows. This one is written by me, because these are the questions I actually get asked, and because most of the answers floating around the internet are wrong. 

If you want the short version: lab grown fancy color diamonds and lab grown old mine cut diamonds are real diamonds. The reason so much of what's on the market looks fake has nothing to do with where the stone came from and everything to do with how it was made and how it was set. That's the whole thesis of this company, and it runs through every answer below.

Lab Grown Diamonds, Straight Answers
1. Are lab grown diamonds real diamonds? 

Yes. A lab grown diamond is carbon in the same cubic crystal structure as a mined diamond. Same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), same refractive index, same thermal conductivity, same everything a gemologist can measure. The Federal Trade Commission dropped the word "natural" from its definition of a diamond back in 2018 for exactly this reason. 

The only real differences are origin and price. One grew underground over a very long time. The other grew in a machine over a few weeks. The stone doesn't know the difference and neither will anyone looking at your hand. 

2. Are lab grown colored diamonds real colored diamonds? 

Yes, though the color usually arrives by a different route. 

In a natural pink diamond, the color comes from distortion in the crystal lattice caused by enormous pressure. In a lab grown pink, the color is almost always created after growth by irradiating a nitrogen-rich diamond and then heating it, which produces nitrogen-vacancy centers that absorb light in the green-yellow range and leave you with pink. 

Both are diamonds. Both are pink. One is a geological accident and one is a controlled process, and the controlled process is exactly why lab grown pinks can be pushed to saturation levels nature almost never produces at size. That's a feature for the factory and a problem for the person wearing it. 

Which is why, when we work in pink, we select Fancy Light. That's the intensity natural pinks actually occur in at wearable sizes, so it's the intensity that reads as a diamond instead of a decision made by a machine. The control that lets a lab overshoot is the same control that lets us stop exactly where we want to. Most of the industry uses it to go loud. We use it to get it right. 

3. Can a jeweler tell a lab grown diamond from a natural one? 

Not by looking at it. Not with a loupe, not with a microscope, not with the little pen tester at the mall. 

Identification requires laboratory instruments that read growth patterns, fluorescence, and phosphorescence signatures. Both GIA and IGI screen every stone they grade. Anyone who claims they can eyeball the difference is telling you a story about themselves, not about the diamond. 

One enormous caveat, and it's the whole reason this company exists. That's true of the stone. It is not true of the situation. Walk into a room with a five carat Fancy Vivid pink on your finger and everyone who knows anything will know, instantly, because a natural stone at that color and that size would be an eight-figure object with a name and a Wikipedia page. Same for Fancy Intense, Fancy Deep, and Fancy Dark at size. The diamond passes. The math doesn't. 

Nobody can identify a lab grown diamond by looking at it. Plenty of people can identify a bad decision by looking at it. 

4. How are lab grown diamonds actually made? 

Two methods. HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) recreates the underground conditions with a press, growing a diamond around a seed crystal in a molten metal flux. CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) uses a methane plasma in a vacuum chamber to deposit carbon onto a seed layer by layer. 

HPHT tends to dominate for fancy yellows, because the nitrogen that causes yellow is easy to introduce in that environment. CVD stones are frequently treated after growth with heat, pressure, irradiation, or some combination, which is how most of the pinks on the market get to be pink.

5. Is a lab grown diamond the same as moissanite or cubic zirconia?

No, and it's worth being blunt about this because the internet muddles it constantly. 

Moissanite is silicon carbide. Different chemical composition, different material, and roughly 2.4 times the dispersion of diamond, which is why it throws that unmistakable rainbow disco flash that reads as costume jewelry to anyone paying attention. Cubic zirconia isn't in the conversation at all. 

A lab grown diamond is a diamond. Moissanite is a diamond simulant. The word people are looking for is "simulant" and the industry avoids it because "lab created moissanite" sounds so much closer to "lab created diamond" than it deserves to. 

6. Do lab grown diamonds come with certificates?

Yes. IGI grades the majority of lab grown stones. GIA issues reports for them too. A legitimate report will say "laboratory-grown" on its face, and it should disclose whether the color is as-grown or the result of post-growth treatment. 

That treatment disclosure is the line most retailers hope you skip. If a pink or blue lab grown stone is being sold with no mention of treatment anywhere, it isn't because there wasn't any. All Every Stone pieces ship with their IGI or GIA report, and I'll point you to that line myself. 

7. Will a lab grown diamond fade, cloud, or change color over time?

No. This one comes up constantly and it's a myth born from people confusing diamonds with moissanite (which doesn't fade either) and with cheap treated gemstones (some of which absolutely do). 

The color centers in a diamond are structural. They are part of the crystal. Barring a jeweler's torch or several thousand degrees of heat, they aren't going anywhere. What actually happens is your diamond gets covered in hand lotion and soap film and looks dull, and then you clean it and it looks new. That's the whole lifecycle. 

8. So why does most lab grown diamond jewelry look cheap? 

Two reasons, and the second one is the one nobody says out loud. 

The first is that it's priced like a commodity and set like one. The industry decided lab grown was the discount aisle, and discount aisles get discount mountings. Stamped heads, thin shanks, a generic halo, and out the door. The stone got cheaper and nobody spent a dollar of the savings on design, which is a genuinely strange decision when you think about it for more than ten seconds. 

The second is color. Since a lab can dial saturation wherever it wants and Fancy Vivid is the grade that sells, almost everything on the market is Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, Fancy Deep, or Fancy Dark. Those are the grades that turn a diamond into a highlighter. A Fancy Deep or Fancy Dark stone reads as murky and closed off, and a Fancy Vivid at five carats reads as plastic, because your eye has spent your entire life learning what saturated color at that size means and it means costume. The producers aren't confused about this. Loud photographs better, loud sells online, and the thing arrives looking like a party favor. 

The technology made extraordinary stones available to people who could never have touched them before. The correct response was to build better jewelry around them. Every Stone exists because almost nobody did.

Fancy Color Diamonds, How Color Actually Works 
9. What is a fancy color diamond?

A diamond whose color is saturated enough to fall off the standard D to Z colorless scale entirely. D to Z measures how little color a white diamond has, and Z is where the scale gives up. Anything with more color than that gets graded on a separate system built for color rather than the absence of it. 

Every hue exists in diamonds: yellow, brown, pink, blue, green, orange, purple, gray, red, and black. They occur in wildly different frequencies, which is where all the pricing drama comes from.

10. What are the fancy color grades in order? 

GIA's fancy color scale runs: Faint, Very Light, Light, Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, Fancy Deep, Fancy Dark. 

The thing nobody tells you is that this is not a quality ranking. It's a description of how much color is present. Fancy Vivid isn't a better diamond than Fancy Light any more than a shout is a better sentence than a normal speaking voice. It's a more expensive one in the natural market, which is why the entire lab grown industry chases it. 

11. Should I always buy the most saturated color I can afford? 

No, and in lab grown specifically I'd argue the opposite. 

Vivid, Intense, and Deep are where the fakeness lives. When a lab grown stone is pushed to Fancy Vivid or Fancy Intense at four or five carats, you're wearing a color at a size that essentially does not occur in nature, and your eye clocks it even if your brain can't explain why. Fancy Deep and Fancy Dark have a separate problem: they're so heavily toned that the stone stops returning light and starts looking like a chip of hard candy. 

Fancy Light and Fancy read as real, because those are the intensities natural stones actually show up in at sizes you'd wear. That's not a compromise grade. That's the grade that's telling the truth. 

Buy the diamond that looks like a diamond, not the one that looks like a marketing decision. 

12. What causes color in a diamond? 

Different mechanisms per color, which is why some are common and some barely exist. 

Nitrogen produces yellow. Boron produces blue. Pink and red come from distortion of the crystal lattice under pressure, with no impurity involved at all. Green comes from natural radiation exposure altering the structure. Brown comes from lattice distortion too, at a different scale. Black is usually heavy graphite or mineral inclusions rather than body color. 

This matters because impurity-driven colors are relatively easy for a lab to reproduce, and structure-driven colors are not. Nobody has figured out how to grow a convincing pink from scratch. They irradiate it afterward instead. 

13. Why do so many lab grown colored diamonds look fake?

Size and saturation mismatch, mostly. 

In nature, the strongest colors show up in the smallest stones. Across the entire history of Rio Tinto's Argyle tender, only ten stones ever exceeded three carats. When you put a Fancy Vivid pink on someone's hand at six carats for four figures, you have created something the world has essentially never seen, and it looks like it. 

The second reason is the setting. Color is relational. A pink diamond dropped into a plain white gold solitaire has nothing around it to argue for its color, so the color just sits there looking dyed. 

The result photographs beautifully and wears like a mistake, which tells you exactly who those stones were made for. They were made for the listing photo, not for you. 

14. What do hue, tone, and saturation mean? 

Hue is the color itself (pink, blue, yellow). Tone is how light or dark it is. Saturation is how intense the color is. 

One useful detail: colored diamonds are graded face-up, in the position you'd actually wear them. Colorless diamonds are graded face-down against a white tray, because for those the entire point is finding color you don't want. Two opposite jobs, two opposite methods. 

15. Does clarity matter in a colored diamond?

Much less than you've been trained to think. 

In colorless diamonds, clarity is a headline number because there's nothing else to look at. In fancy colors, color leads and clarity follows. Plenty of famous natural pinks are heavily included, and in pink specifically the graining that comes with the color mechanism is part of why the stone is pink at all. 

Chasing VVS in a colored diamond is spending money in the one place your eye will never look.

16. What does a secondary hue like "purplish pink" or "greenish yellow" mean?

The modifier is the secondary hue and the last word is the dominant one. Purplish pink is a pink diamond with purple in it. Greenish yellow is a yellow diamond leaning green. 

The trade often treats modifiers as a discount, and I think that's mostly laziness. My own engagement ring is a natural fancy greenish yellow, and I get asked about it everywhere I go, which never happened with any colorless stone I've owned. The modifier is frequently the interesting part.

17. Are lab grown pink diamonds real pink diamonds? 

They're real diamonds and they're really pink. Whether they're "real pink diamonds" in the sense the natural market means depends on how much you care about the mechanism. 

Natural pink is caused by plastic deformation of the crystal. Lab grown pink is nearly always created by irradiating a nitrogen-rich stone and annealing it, producing nitrogen-vacancy centers. The color is permanent and structural in both cases. One is an accident that took a billion years. The other is a Tuesday in a converted fruit warehouse in Wenatchee, Washington, which is where the largest lab diamond producer in the United States runs its foundry on hydropower from the Columbia River. 

Nobody is going to look at your hand and calculate the mechanism. They're going to look at whether it reads as a jewel or as a gumball, and that gets decided by the grade you chose and the setting you put it in. 

18. Why are natural pink diamonds so expensive? 

Because the supply effectively ended. 

Rio Tinto's Argyle mine in Western Australia produced roughly 90 percent of the world's pink diamonds and it stopped mining on November 3, 2020, after 37 years. There is no replacement source. Everything natural and pink that exists is already above ground. 

For scale: the 59.60 carat Pink Star, the largest internally flawless Fancy Vivid pink GIA has ever graded, sold for $71.2 million at Sotheby's Hong Kong in 2017. It's still the record for any gem at auction. That's the ceiling, and it's why a lab grown alternative that looks natural is worth doing properly. 

19. How do I tell a real pink diamond from a fake one?

First, separate the two questions hiding inside that one. 

A fake pink diamond isn't a diamond at all. It's a pink sapphire, a pink CZ, a glass doublet, or a coated stone with color sprayed onto the pavilion. A coating scratches off. A sapphire has different optics and is noticeably less bright. A doublet shows a seam under magnification. 

A lab grown pink diamond is not fake. It's a diamond. If someone sold it to you as natural, that's fraud, and a GIA or IGI report settles the argument in about four seconds. That's why every stone we sell ships with one.

20. What is a canary diamond?

A trade nickname for an intensely saturated yellow diamond, usually Fancy Intense or Fancy Vivid. It is not a grading term and it appears on no certificate anywhere. 

It's a great word. It moves product. Just know that when a retailer says canary, they're describing the vibe, and the report is describing the diamond. One of those two is legally accountable. Read the report.

21. What makes a blue diamond blue? 

Boron atoms substituting into the carbon lattice. That's it, and it's remarkable, because those same boron atoms make blue diamonds semiconductive. Blue diamonds conduct electricity. Almost no other gem does anything like that. 

Worth knowing: some blue diamonds on the market get their color from irradiation instead of boron, and those tend to read greenish blue. The report will say which. If a listing is silent on the subject, that silence is the answer. 

22. What does a blue diamond engagement ring mean? 

Honestly? Whatever you decide it means. 

There's a long tradition of assigning blue stones to loyalty, trust, and eternity, most of which was carried over from sapphire symbolism and then applied to blue diamonds by people selling blue diamonds. There's no ancient tradition here. Blue diamonds were barely available to anyone until Argyle and a handful of other sources made them findable at all. 

What a blue diamond does mean is that you picked it. Colorless is the default. Choosing a color is a decision, and decisions are what people ask about.

23. Why are red diamonds the rarest color? 

Because red is pink with the intensity turned all the way up, and the crystal distortion that causes it is a needle-threading event. 

Fewer than about 30 natural red diamonds are known to exist, and most are under half a carat. The largest, the Moussaieff Red, is 5.11 carats. Most stones sold as red are graded purplish red or brownish red, because true Fancy Red is essentially a rounding error in the world's diamond supply. 

Lab grown red exists and it's produced the same way lab grown pink is, pushed further. 

24. What is a chocolate diamond? 

A brown diamond with a trademark on it. 

"Chocolate Diamond" is a registered brand term belonging to Le Vian. The stone underneath is a brown diamond, and brown is the most common fancy color there is. Argyle produced them by the millions and for decades they were sold as industrial grit. 

That's not a reason to dislike brown diamonds. Cognac and champagne stones are genuinely gorgeous in the right setting and the right metal. It's a reason to know what you're paying for, which is a stone plus a marketing campaign.

25. Are green diamonds real? 

Yes, and natural ones are among the hardest gems on earth to certify. 

Natural green comes from millions of years of exposure to radiation from surrounding rock, which knocks carbon atoms out of position. The problem is that a lab can produce a nearly identical effect with an irradiation chamber in an afternoon. Distinguishing natural green from treated green is one of the genuinely difficult calls in gemology, and often the color exists only as a thin skin on the rough that gets polished away.

Lab grown green is available, honest about itself, and one of the most underused colors in jewelry. Green and pink make each other better. Green and yellow do too. 

Personal bias, fully disclosed: a green diamond is my favorite gem in the world. Not my favorite diamond, my favorite gem, full stop. Nothing else does what a good green does in low light. I've never gotten over the first time I saw a tray of them and I don't intend to.

26. What about gray and purple diamonds? 

Both are worth your attention and both are quietly having a moment. 

Gray diamonds are usually hydrogen-related, and a good one has a stormy, slightly metallic quality that photographs beautifully and looks even better in person. Purple is rare in nature, typically comes with a secondary hue (purplish pink, pinkish purple), and reads as expensive without shouting. 

These are the colors people land on when they've gotten tired of every engagement ring looking the same. They're also colors that live or die entirely on the setting, which is the whole reason I'm in business. 

Old Mine Cut Diamonds
27. What is an old mine cut diamond?

The dominant diamond cut from roughly the 1700s through the late 1800s, cut entirely by hand before electricity, before saws, before optical modeling. 

The signatures: a squarish cushiony outline, a small table, a tall crown, a deep pavilion, and a large open culet that looks like a little window when you stare straight down into the stone. Cutters followed the shape of the rough to save weight, so every one is slightly different. It's the direct ancestor of the modern round brilliant, and it behaves nothing like it. 

28. What's the difference between an old mine cut and an old European cut?

Chronology and outline. Old mine cuts came first and are cushion-shaped, following the natural octahedral rough. Old European cuts came later, once bruting machines allowed a truly round girdle, and they're round with a smaller culet and a slightly more organized facet pattern. 

Both are hand cut. Both have the high crown and small table that make the light behave the way it does. Old mine is the more irregular, more romantic, more idiosyncratic of the two. 

29. Why do old mine cuts look so good in candlelight and restaurant lighting? 

Because they were designed for it, whether the cutters thought of it that way or not. 

A modern brilliant is optimized to return a huge number of tiny, rapid flashes under bright overhead light, which is exactly the lighting condition in a jewelry store and almost nowhere else in your life. An old mine cut has larger facets, so it returns fewer, bigger, slower flashes. In dim warm light it glows and blinks instead of glittering. 

You wear jewelry at dinner and at parties, not under a jeweler's halogen. The old cuts understood the assignment 250 years early.

30. Can you get a lab grown old mine cut diamond? 

Yes, and it's one of the best things to happen to jewelry in the last decade. 

A natural old mine cut has to be found. The supply is fixed, because nobody has hand cut a diamond this way since electricity, and antique stones command a premium that has nothing to do with the diamond and everything to do with there being a finite number of them. Want a specific size, a specific outline, a clean stone, and a culet you actually like? Get in line behind the collectors and bring a wire transfer. 

A lab grown old mine cut is cut fresh, to the antique proportions, from a stone that didn't exist two months ago. Same geometry, same small table, same tall crown, same open culet, same glow. The difference is that you can specify it instead of hunting it. You get the cut you fell in love with at the size you want, and you get it this season instead of after a three-year search.

31. Is a lab grown old mine cut "authentic"?

Depends on what you're buying it for. 

If you want a specific object that a specific person held in 1840, no lab stone will ever give you that, and you should go buy an antique. Provenance is real and I respect it. 

If what you love is the way the cut behaves, the geometry, the glow, the big lazy flashes, then a lab grown old mine cut delivers the exact same optical performance, because optical performance comes from proportions and material. It's carbon in the same arrangement, cut to the same angles. The light doesn't check the birth certificate. 

32. Do old mine cuts sparkle less than modern diamonds? 

They sparkle differently, and yes, less brightly under a spotlight. That's the point. 

Modern round brilliants are engineered to maximize measurable light return. If you put a modern round and an old mine cut side by side under a display case light, the modern stone wins and it isn't close. Move both to a candlelit table and the old mine cut is the one you can't stop looking at. 

One is optimized for the sale. The other is optimized for the next forty years. 

33. Does an old mine cut look smaller than a modern diamond of the same carat weight? 

Slightly, yes, and it's worth knowing before you shop. 

Carat is weight, not size. An old mine cut carries more of its weight below the girdle in that deep pavilion, so a two carat old mine cut faces up a touch smaller than a two carat modern brilliant. If you're optimizing for the biggest possible number of millimeters per dollar, the modern cut wins. 

Nobody has ever fallen in love with a diamond because of its millimeters per dollar. What you get back for those fractions is the depth, the glow, and the fact that nobody else at the table has one. That trade takes about four seconds to make once you've seen the stone in person.

34. Why is the culet open on an old mine cut?

Two reasons, one practical and one aesthetic. 

Practically, a fine point at the bottom of a hand-cut diamond is a chip waiting to happen, and a cutter working without modern tooling protected the tip by faceting it flat. Aesthetically, the open culet is what gives you that little dark hexagon when you look down through the table, which people either love or find unnerving. 

I love it. It's the fingerprint of a cut made by a person rather than a machine. 

35. Are old mine cuts durable enough for an engagement ring? 

Yes, with sane setting choices. It's a diamond. It's still a 10 on the Mohs scale. 

The two things to respect: the open culet sits lower in the stone than you'd expect and shouldn't be left exposed against a hard surface, and the high crown means the stone sits taller, so it catches on sweaters if it's set carelessly. Both are setting problems, and setting problems are solvable by whoever designed the setting. 

Every piece we build accounts for the specific stone's proportions. That's most of what the design process actually is.

Price, Value, and Resale
36. How much do lab grown fancy color diamonds cost, and why does a finished piece cost more than a loose stone I found online? 

Loose stones are a commodity market and the pricing moves constantly, driven by color, size, intensity, and how many people are growing that color that quarter. Finished Every Stone pieces start around $5,000. 

Those two numbers are not comparable, and I'd rather say that out loud than let you discover it in a shopping cart. A loose stone is an ingredient. The price of a finished piece covers the stone, the metal, the design work, the casting or fabrication, the setting, the finishing, and the fact that the setting was conceived around that specific diamond's color and proportions and then never made again. 

You can absolutely buy a loose lab grown yellow and have it dropped into a stock head somewhere for less money. It will look like every other lab grown yellow dropped into a stock head. That's the market we exist in opposition to. 

37. What would one of these stones cost if it were natural? Do the math for me. 

Happily, because the numbers make my argument better than I can. Everything below is retail, current as of July 2026, and every example is three carats, because that's the size we work in. 

Example one: a three carat old mine cut. 

A natural antique old mine cut at three carats runs roughly $40,000 for the stone alone, and that's in the color you'd actually find, which is warm. There's a four carat antique on the market right now at $38,950, GIA graded SI1, S color. If you want a three carat antique in E color and VS clarity, the honest answer is that it basically doesn't exist. Those stones were cut by hand in 1860 from whatever rough was sitting on the bench, and nobody was sorting for E. 

A lab grown old mine cut at three carats, E color, VS2, IGI certified, is $2,149 at retail. Same geometry, same small table, same tall crown, same open culet, better color and clarity than the antique, at about five percent of the price. 

Now the part everyone skips. Natural diamonds resell for roughly 25 to 50 percent of retail. Lab grown resells for roughly 10 to 30 percent, and sometimes nothing at all. 

Natural: paid $40,000, gets back $10,000 to $20,000, loses $20,000 to $30,000. 

Lab grown: paid $2,149, gets back $215 to $645, loses about $1,500 to $1,900. 

The natural buyer has the better percentage and the worse morning. They spent roughly $25,000 to demonstrate a superior recovery rate. The lab buyer lost about the cost of a decent mattress and wore the same cut on their hand the whole time. 

Example two: a three carat radiant, Fancy Vivid Yellow. 

A natural three carat Fancy Vivid Yellow is about $75,000 for the stone. For reference, a two carat Fancy Vivid Yellow radiant ring is on the market at $78,500 right now, and a 3.07 carat Fancy Intense Yellow, one full grade down in saturation, is listed at $90,000. 

A lab grown 3.08 carat Fancy Vivid Yellow radiant is $5,720 at retail. Not a typo, and not a cheap stone by lab standards either. Fancy color at size is genuinely harder to grow than the colorless goods everyone quotes at four hundred dollars. 

Natural fancy colors resell better than colorless, so let's be generous and say 40 to 60 percent. 

Natural: paid $75,000, gets back $30,000 to $45,000, loses $30,000 to $45,000. 

Lab grown: paid $5,720, gets back $570 to $1,720, loses about $4,000 to $5,150. 

The natural yellow buyer lost roughly eight times more money. Across a dinner table, the two rings look like the same ring. 

Example three: blue diamond, which is where the natural argument is strongest and least useful. 

Blue actually appreciates. That's not marketing, it's the data: fancy color index figures have blues up 244 percent since 2005. If you're going to make the investment case for a colored diamond, blue or green is where you make it. 

So here's the entry fee. Natural fancy blue runs $30,000 to more than $500,000 per carat depending on the grade, and at three carats a Fancy Vivid Blue crosses a million dollars per carat. The three carat blue in this comparison is a three million dollar stone. For scale, the 14.62 carat Oppenheimer Blue sold for $57.5 million in 2016, roughly $3.9 million per carat. A lab grown blue runs somewhere between $500 and $2,000 per carat, which puts the same look at three carats in the low thousands. 

Yes, the natural blue appreciates. To find out, you need three million dollars in cash, parked in a rock, doing nothing, in an asset you can't sell on a Tuesday. It pays no dividend, it has no bid, and the day you buy it at retail you're already underwater against the wholesale market it actually trades in. You'll get your money back eventually, probably, if you hold it for twenty years and find the right buyer and the market cooperates. 

If you have three million dollars and you want that trade, take it. I'm not being sarcastic. It's a real asset and it has outperformed most things. But that's a portfolio decision wearing a ring costume, and almost nobody reading this page is making it. Most people want a blue diamond on their hand at dinner. There's another way to get there. 

Two honest caveats, because I'd rather you trust me than agree with me. Resale percentages are ranges, not promises, and they swing on the buyer, the paperwork, and the day of the week. And the natural stones in all three examples are genuine assets with genuine markets. I'm not pretending otherwise. I'm pointing out that a genuine market with a fifty percent haircut on a $75,000 purchase is still a $37,500 hole in your life, and no percentage on earth fills it back in. 

38. Do lab grown diamonds hold their value?

No, and neither does almost any jewelry you buy at retail. 

Here's the part the natural diamond industry doesn't advertise: walk into any jeweler with a natural one carat colorless diamond you paid $8,000 for and see what they offer you. The resale market for mass-market natural diamonds is brutal and always has been. The "investment" framing was invented in an ad campaign. 

Lab grown is worse in percentage terms and much better in dollar terms, which is the only term that spends. See the math above if you want it in numbers. 

Genuine appreciation lives in a narrow band: Argyle pinks, fancy vivid blues and greens, historic stones, exceptional naturals with paperwork. That market is not where anyone reading this is shopping, and it isn't where I'm selling. Buy jewelry because you want to wear it.

39. Do colored diamonds depreciate at the same rate as colorless diamonds?

No. This is the strongest argument the natural side has, so it deserves the real numbers rather than a dodge. 

The Fancy Color Research Foundation tracks wholesale fancy color prices. In 2024 its index fell 2.2 percent, the steepest annual drop since the index launched in 2014. In the same year, white diamond prices fell 13.3 percent. That's a six-fold difference, and it's the entire basis for calling fancy colors a safe haven. 

Zoom out and it looks better still. Going back to 2005, FCRF data has pinks up 394 percent, blues up 244 percent, and yellows up 50 percent, with the category compounding at roughly 5.7 percent a year over twenty years. 

Now the two things nobody quotes at you. 

First, yellow is the soft spot of the category. Yellows fell 5.6 percent in 2024 and 6.1 percent over the trailing twelve months into Q1 2025, and the three carat Fancy Intense Yellow specifically dropped 3 percent in a single quarter. The color everyone reaches for as their entry into fancy color is the color doing the worst. 

Second, and this is the big one: that index is wholesale. You bought at retail. You will sell into wholesale. That gap swallows the index whole. A stone can be up 5 percent on the index and still hand you a 50 percent loss, because the index was never measuring your transaction in the first place. 

So the ranking is real: natural fancy colors hold up better than natural colorless, which holds up better than lab grown. All three lose you money at retail. The only variable is how much, and it scales with what you paid. Blue is the one color where the appreciation case genuinely holds, and the price of admission is in the previous answer.

40. Are lab grown diamond prices going to keep falling?

Colorless lab grown prices have fallen off a cliff and will probably keep drifting down, because growing colorless diamonds is now a solved manufacturing problem and manufacturing problems get cheaper forever. 

Fancy colors behave differently. The yields are lower, the treatment steps add cost and failure rates, and a genuinely well-colored stone in an unusual hue is still not something you can order by the kilo. Old mine cutting is another constraint entirely, because it's slow, wastes weight, and requires a cutter willing to do it. 

None of which is a reason to buy for price appreciation. See the previous three answers.

41. Is a colored diamond a good investment?

I'm a jeweler, not your financial advisor, so treat this as an opinion rather than advice. 

Natural fancy colors have historically outperformed most other gems, and Argyle pinks in particular have appreciated substantially since the mine closed. That's a real market with real auction records behind it, and it requires six or seven figures, a wholesale relationship, and a long horizon to participate. If that's you, buy natural and buy the best stone you can find. 

A lab grown piece is not that trade and I won't sell it as one. It's a piece of jewelry that will look extraordinary for the rest of your life and that you can afford to actually wear instead of insuring and hiding. That's the return.

42. Should I insure my piece, and do you provide an appraisal?

Yes, insure it. Most homeowner's and renter's policies cap jewelry coverage at a number far below what you just spent, and a scheduled rider or a specialist jewelry policy costs a fraction of what people expect.

Settings and One of a Kind Design
43. Why does the setting matter so much for a colored diamond?

Because color is relational, and every serious fancy color collector has known this for a century. 

Pink and green make each other better. Blue and pink do. Green and yellow do. The metal underneath a stone changes how much color reaches your eye. The proportion of surrounding stones changes whether the center reads as saturated or washed out. A setting is a color instrument. 

The standard industry move is a prong solitaire or a generic halo, and that's the end of the creative process. It's the equivalent of buying a great cut of meat and boiling it.

44. What metal should a colored diamond be set in?

It depends entirely on the stone, which is a boring answer, so here's the useful version. 

Rose gold behind a pink stone pushes the color warmer and stronger, which is either exactly what you want or the thing that tips it into looking dyed. Yellow gold does the same for yellows. Platinum and white gold stay neutral and let the stone argue for itself, which is riskier and more honest. 

The mistake is deciding the metal before you've looked at the diamond. I decide it last.

45. What does "one of a kind" actually mean here?

It means the piece you're looking at is the only one of that piece. One stone, one setting, one time. I am not making five of the exact same diamond in the exact same setting and calling each one special. When it sells, that piece is gone, and refreshing the page won't bring it back. If you see something you love, grab it. 

What I will do is revisit a design. If you saw a ring on the site or on my social profiles and it sold before you got there, tell me, because that design can be built again. It will be built around a different stone, which means different color, different proportions, different character, and the setting gets adjusted to suit it. It'll be yours instead of a copy of hers. 

So: the design can come back. The diamond can't. That's the honest version, and it's a lot more useful to you than a brand promising uniqueness it has no intention of honoring.

46. Do you do custom pieces?

Yes. If you have a stone in mind, a piece you've been picturing for years, or an heirloom you want reconceived, use the Inquire page and tell me about it. 

Custom work requires a deposit, takes time, and is final sale once design or sourcing begins, because by then the piece exists only for you. I'd rather tell you that up front than in the fine print.

47. What comes with my piece?

The piece, its Every Stone packaging, and its IGI or GIA certificate for the center stone. The certificate is linked on the product page too, so you can read it before you buy rather than after.

48. Can I have a piece resized?

Contact me before you purchase. Some pieces resize easily and some don't, depending on the setting, the stone layout, and how the shank is constructed. 

The important part: once a piece has been altered or resized it's no longer returnable, so we sort out sizing before anything gets cut.

49. Do you ship internationally?

Not currently. Every Stone ships within the United States only. All orders go out fully insured and require a signature on delivery.

50. Why do pieces sell out, and what is The Insider?

Because there's exactly one of each of them.
