Are lab grown pink diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. A lab grown pink diamond is carbon crystallized in the same cubic lattice as a mined diamond, with the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale. It is not cubic zirconia. It is not moissanite. It is not a simulant of any kind. A trained gemologist needs specialist equipment to separate one from a mined stone, and the only meaningful difference is where it came from.
when people say a pink diamond ring "looks fake," they almost never mean they suspect glass. They mean it looks cheap. Those are different complaints with different causes, and the second one has a real answer that nobody in this category wants to give you.
I will give it to you.
So why do lab grown pink diamonds look fake?
Three things, and they compound.
- The size and the color grade are a combination that essentially does not occur in nature, and some part of your brain already knows it.
- The pink itself arrives by a completely different physical route than natural pink, and that route leaves a visual signature.
- The stone gets dropped into a setting that was designed for nothing in particular
The first one is the most important, and it is the one nobody talks about.
How rare is a large, vivid natural pink diamond?
Rarer than almost anyone shopping for one understands. Here is the math.
The Argyle mine in Western Australia produced more than 90% of the world’s pink diamonds until it closed in 2020. The numbers coming out of it looked like this:

About 20,000 carats came out pink, from roughly 130 million carats mined annually. That is 0.01%.

After the material lost in cutting, the entire planet got somewhere around 9,000 polished carats of pink diamond per year.

The majority of those pinks were under 0.08 carats. That is melee, the size used to decorate a center stone rather than be one.

The average Argyle stone left the mine at around 0.10 carat.

Gather every Argyle pink above half a carat produced in a given year and you could hold all of them in one hand.
Once a year, Argyle selected its 40 to 60 finest stones for the tender, an invitation-only sale for about 150 buyers worldwide. The best of the best, cherry-picked from an entire year of production.
Leibish analyzed every tender ever held. Of roughly 1,277 stones offered across the tender’s entire history, ten were above 3.00 carats. Ten. That is 0.78%. Exactly one year, 2001, produced a stone above 4 carats: a 4.15 carat Fancy Intense Purplish Pink. Not vivid. Intense.
Three decades. The greatest pink diamond source that has ever existed. Hand-selecting its fifty best stones every year. Ten stones over three carats, total.
Now go type "pink diamond ring" into Google and count the three and four carat vivid pinks staring back at you from the shopping grid.
For scale, here is what the real ones cost

The Williamson Pink Star, 11.15 carats, Fancy Vivid Pink, Internally Flawless, sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong in October 2022 for $57.7 million. That is roughly $5.18 million per carat, a world record price per carat for any diamond or gemstone.

The CTF Pink Star, 59.60 carats, Fancy Vivid Pink, sold for $71.2 million in 2017 and remains the most expensive jewel ever sold at auction.
Those stones are your brain’s reference library for the phrase "vivid pink diamond." So when a four carat vivid pink shows up in your feed for the price of a used Corolla, you do the math without anyone asking you to. You may not be able to articulate why it looks wrong. It looks wrong anyway.
Where does the pink in a lab grown diamond actually come from?
This is where it gets genuinely interesting, and where every retailer in the category goes quiet.
GIA researchers studied a sample of 1,000 pink diamonds and confirmed that in 99.5% of them, the color comes from distortion in the crystal structure itself, not from a trace element. Nitrogen makes a diamond yellow and boron makes it blue, but pink is not a chemistry story at all. The crystal got physically squeezed and warped under enormous pressure, and the warping bends light into pink. In natural pinks that color concentrates in narrow parallel bands called glide planes, or pink graining, and cutters orient those lines perpendicular to the table to push the body color as far as it will go.
That is why a fine natural pink has depth. The color is uneven. It has grain, it has shadow, it moves as the stone moves.
Lab grown pink works nothing like that. According to GIA’s Sally Eaton-Magaña, the most common method by a wide margin is to take a lab grown diamond that was grown with nitrogen impurities, irradiate it, then heat it to somewhere between 600 and 1000 degrees Celsius. That creates negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy centers, and those NV centers are what produce the pink.
And here is the sentence that should end the conversation: GIA’s researchers state there is no known method of replicating plastic deformation and its 550 nm absorption band through any laboratory treatment or growth process. None. Not with current technology.
Two different roads to the same word on a certificate, and the road shows in the stone.

Natural pink: color created by physical distortion of the crystal, concentrated into narrow bands. Uneven, grained, full of depth. It moves as the stone moves.

Lab grown pink: color created by NV centers after growth, distributed evenly through the entire stone. No graining, no zoning, no movement. A flat wall of pink.
It gets worse when you push it. GIA lab notes on treated pink CVD material describe stones grading out as Fancy Deep brownish orangy pink and Fancy brown-pink, with the pink and the orange both traced to the same NV absorption behavior. GIA has also documented treated pink material with a visibly mottled face-up appearance. Crank the mechanism and it drags a secondary color along for the ride, which is exactly why so much of this jewelry has a faint highlighter quality you cannot quite name.
Are lab grown pink diamonds treated?
Almost always, yes, and there is nothing wrong with that as long as it is disclosed. IGI reports on lab grown diamonds specify whether a stone is "as grown with no indication of post-growth treatment" or whether it "may include post-growth treatment." Ask for the report. Read the comments section, not just the color line.
A seller who hands over the certificate without flinching is telling you something. So is one who does not.
What color grade should you actually buy?
Here is where I lose the room, because this is the opposite of how the entire market sells.
Buy lighter. Faint, Very Light, Light, Fancy Light, Fancy. For two reasons.
The first is plausibility. Lighter pink is the only intensity that occurs naturally at any real size with any regularity, which means a two or three carat light pink is a stone that could exist. A three carat vivid could not. The lighter grades are the ones that read as a diamond rather than a decision made by a marketing department.
The second reason matters more, and it is a design argument. A vivid pink arrives finished. It is already turned up to eleven straight out of the lab, and it leaves you nowhere to go. Anything you put next to it is a distraction, and every design decision after that point is damage control.
A lighter pink is raw material. The metal temperature moves it. Contrast moves it. Accent stones can pull the hue in a direction, warm it, cool it, deepen it. Proportion changes how the eye reads the saturation. A well-chosen light pink in the right setting will out-perform a vivid one in a bad setting every day of the week, and it will do it without announcing itself from across the room.
The setting is a color instrument. The lab grown market treats it as a bracket, because designing one setting for one stone does not scale, and scale is the entire business model. That is the real reason your ring looks the way it does. It has almost nothing to do with the diamond being grown.
How much does a lab grown pink diamond cost?
There are two different questions hiding inside this one, and conflating them is how people end up confused and angry.
The first question is what a loose lab grown pink stone costs as a commodity. Pricing here is chaotic, so treat these as ranges to argue with rather than gospel, and verify anything you are quoted against several sellers.

Across all grades and sizes, loose lab grown pink runs somewhere around $800 to $8,000+ per carat. Natural pink pricing has only hardened since Argyle closed in 2020 and supply went from scarce to finite.
The second question is what a piece of jewelry costs, and the two numbers have far less to do with each other than the internet has trained you to believe. A loose stone is raw material. A finished piece reflects the stone, the metal, the accent stones, the bench work, and whether a single design decision was made on your behalf beyond dropping the center into a stock halo. Two rings can hold stones of nearly identical commodity value and be nothing alike as objects.
Compare stones to stones. Compare pieces to pieces. Comparing a loose stone to a finished piece and calling the difference a markup is like pricing a house by weighing the lumber.

If you are a collector acquiring an asset, that math might work. If you want to wear a pink diamond, it is an indefensible trade.
How do you spot an obviously lab grown pink in four seconds?

Check the carat weight against the color grade. Vivid or Intense at 3 carats and up is the fastest tell there is. In nature, that combination is a museum object.

Look for movement in the color. Flat and uniform across the whole face is the signature of NV center color. You want variation, depth some shadow.

Tilt it. If the pink swings orange or purple, the treatment is running hot.

View it against skin. Every product photo you have ever seen was shot on white or black because it maximizes apparent saturation. Your hand is neither.

Read the certificate comments for treatment language, not just the color grade on the front.

Ask what the setting was designed around. If the answer is "that’s our classic halo," the setting was designed around a spreadsheet.
Are lab grown pink diamonds a good investment?
No. Buy one because you want to look at it every day for the next forty years. Natural fancy color is the collector market, it takes real expertise to navigate, and anyone selling you a lab grown stone on resale value is selling you something else entirely.
